I do think custom fields is a necessary. Mostly because I want to de-simplify the current workflow process.... :) I would like custom fields so that I can use various flags to let users know when a document requires review.

The current way that custom fields are supported is very kludgy: having to force the user to exit the template php and XML files is not a good idea in the long term. For what happens if the docman template is updated? The user will need to perform these edits all over again.

To my way of thinking this is an absolute must. Amazed that one cannot already add them. With a product of this calibre being able to add custom fields should be a no-brainer.

This is a Must Have - would be great to standardize user input. It would be even better if the custom field could be different for each caregory.

The K2 addon implements custom fields in a very interesting way that I want to recommend as the right one to follow.
They let you create your custom fields as you want (many options in there) and then you can group those fields, finally, a category can be linked to the group so all the documents stored in that category will request those values on upload.
That would be a nice feature for your already great tool -

Essential for needs of groups like ours: e.g. using it to store a repository of scientific papers in pdf format and allowing search by title, author, etc. This, combined with the possibility of bulk adding (linking, not uploading) files located at the university server, would be wonderfulll!
